Beacon Hill
Beacon Hill received its name from the beacon which stood on Boston’s highest hill (higher at that time, before the top was taken off for landfill to create more of Boston), warning resident’s of danger. This is the nation’s oldest residential area, where townhouses line brick sidewalks with gas lights.
Black Heritage Trail
From this stop riders may walk the Black Heritage Trail, with its rich trove of American history, and rejoin the tour at Stop 9. Included on the Black Heritage Trail is, among other sites, the memorial to Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Regiment, upon which the movie Glory was based. The 54th was the North’s first black regiment and fought with valor at the battle of Fort Wagner.
